It was following his hockey career that he turned his attention toward education and with the help of a student award through the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta, completed his Bachelor of Commerce Degree with a Major in Energy Management at the University of Calgary.
“The award had great impact on me as it allowed me the freedom to focus on my studies while providing me with financial support in pursuing my educational goals,” he says, noting attaining that degree also helped lead him to his career back home in Grande Prairie.
“My wife and I decided to move home because we absolutely love Grande Prairie and believe it is a great place for a young family to grow. The Peace Country has so much to offer and we are excited to raise a young family here,” says Chomyc.
While Chomyc has benefitted from the philanthropy of others, he also believes very much in giving back, working as a volunteer for the Relay for Life and as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters during his hockey and university years.
Since returning to the Swan City, Chomyc has turned his hockey skills towards teaching the next generation, working with the Canadian Tire First Shift Program as well as coaching the Grande Prairie Athletic Club’s Bantam AAA Hockey Club.
In the past year, his career has taken a shift of it’s own from working in measurement and regulatory specialization in the oil and gas industry to a role as a buyer’s specialist with Sean Gillis Realty Group at Re/Max in Grande Prairie.
“My wife Tanya, our son Porter, and dog Harlee love the Grande Prairie area and thoroughly enjoy living in the Peace Country,” he says.
