The Grade 3 Reading Academy Society, in cooperation with Grande Prairie Regional College, Grande Prairie Public School District, Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools and Peace Wapiti School Division, has been providing extra literacy assistance for kids in Grade 3 for 11 years.

“The secret sauce is our student/teacher ratio of two instructors for every 10 children,” says Linda Side, co-founder of the program with her sister Rhonda Side. “We have an incredible leadership and support team that applies unique strategies that are not always feasible to implement within the parameters of a typical classroom environment,” she explains. “We will use creative play, music, physical activity, and any reading approaches that inspire the children in ways that they may not have experienced to date.”

Local teachers recommend students each year for the program based on a set of criteria established by the Reading Academy Society. There is no charge to families for the program, which not only provides three full weeks of guided learning experiences, but also offers free busing, lunches and snacks. The only stipulation is that parents commit to having their child attend the full three weeks of the program.
