The Pirates Fastball team was created in 2011 and brought together Doug Yates and Shayne Milligan, the original founders of the Pirates Fastball Club Legacy Fund. Having played the sport since childhood they understand the value of being part of a team and the positive benefits it can reap throughout life.
Not only has playing Fastball built lifelong friendships with lots of interesting and good people, it has also created a strong family and given the group a platform to give back. Author Margaret Wheatley once stated “Whatever the problem, community is the answer”. This sums up the work of the Pirates Fastball Club. The most creative and lasting solutions to enhance community well-being depend upon people who unite around a common vision; a vision to work together on initiatives that make solutions a reality.
With this spirit, it was in late 2019 the club noticed a lack of opportunities for female fastball players in the region and set to work creating the Grande Prairie Pirates Girls Fastball. The teams began to train in early 2020 and since then have expanded to include 12 teams ranging from ages 8-18.
Pirates Fastball believes in giving back to the community, and the first step is investing in players who have come through the program. The Pirates Fastball Girls Legacy Fund will support a student in their post-secondary education that has previously been a part of the Grande Prairie Pirates Girls Fastball.
You can make a difference in our community – not only for today but forever. When you make a donation to the Pirates Fastball Girls Legacy Fund, we invest that gift into a permanent endowment fund and the original gift is never spent. Earnings from your gift will support a student in their post-secondary education that has previously been a part of the Grande Prairie Pirates Girls Fastball..
