The couple came to Grande Prairie with their children, Ken, Mary and Helen in 1975, and were very active in the community for years.
Both involved in social services, Mac worked for Alberta Community and Social Services and Chris for the City of Grande Prairie, Family and Community Support Services until their retirements.
Over the years their involvement with community agencies included volunteering with Rotary, Wapiti Community Dorm Society, Canadian Mental Health Association, Family Education Society, Healthy Families and Coats for Kids, PACE, the Prairie Gallery, Pregnant Teens and the Rotary Club’s Guatemala Literacy Society.
In 1977 Mac was awarded the Queen Elizabeth 11 Silver Jubilee medal. In 1994 Chris and Mac were jointly awarded the Premier’s Council in Support of Alberta Families Service Award. Chris and Mac were both made Rotary Paul Harris Fellows by the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie.
There is a children’s playground in Grande Prairie and a school in Guatemala with the Henderson name, honouring their commitment to others.
Both very interested in social development work both at home and throughout the developing world, Mac and Chris also enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren, Cam and Claire, travelling off the beaten path and shared a passion for giving back.
Through that passion Mac and Chris first established a fund with the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta in 2011 to support the Wapiti Dorm and the Pregnant and Parenting Teen Society.
Mac, sadly, passed away in March 2017 at the age of 87, but his legacy lives on with Chris, their children, grandchildren and the newly established Mac and Chris Henderson Family Fund.
Believing gifts to the Community Foundation are a way to sustain their commitment to Grande Prairie’s future as a vibrant city, the Henderson family’s new fund is a donor-advised fund in support of community needs.
You can make a difference in our community – not only for today but forever. When you make a donation to the Mac and Chris Henderson Family Fund, we invest that gift into a permanent endowment fund and the original gift is never spent. Earnings from your gift are distributed in our community to support all needs in the community. Donations can be made online here – https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/39483 or by calling the Community Foundation at (780) 538-2820.
