Howard William Griffiths was born June 4, 1965, in Grande Prairie. He grew up as an only child on the family farm 3 miles straight west of Sexsmith. Howard was an avid curler who loved the game and was good at it. Football was another sport Howard discovered enjoyment in when he joined the Sexsmith Sabres High School team. He played for all three years as a linesman of which friends say “he could hit really hard”. During these three years the Sabres won the Peace Bowl two times, a testament to his skill and teamwork.
Howard’s real love though was the farm, working beside his mother and father. He enjoyed a simple life, never travelling much, just enjoying the farm and his work. Howard took pride in his equipment, which always shined and were in immaculate shape. His Chevrolet truck was his pride and joy. Howard left us too soon on December 4, 2020, at the age of 55, but his legacy remains through the impact this award will have on others who will benefit from it. In his honor, Howards family and friends have created the Howard Griffiths Memorial Student Award Fund to provide a student award or bursary to a resident of the Sexmith or Clairmont area. First priority will be given to students studying Agricultural Science, and/or have played the sport of curling and/or football. Second priority will be given to students registered in Animal Health or a registered Trades or Apprenticeship Technical Training program.
